Spider-Man director Sam Raimi is to make a film based on video game World of Warcraft, Hollywood studio Legendary Pictures has announced.

The movie is set to be a live action version of the popular game, which enables players to become characters including dwarves, orcs and trolls.

Raimi said he was "thrilled" to be bringing such a "fantastic, action-packed story" to the screen.

The film-maker's other credits include recent horror release Drag Me To Hell.

Early in his career, he directed the cult Evil Dead horror movies.

Legendary Pictures said Raimi "has clearly demonstrated a genius for adapting existing fictional universes for mainstream audiences.

It added that the director "stays true to the spirit of the original content."

The Warcraft universe is one of conflict

Charles Roven, who is to co-produce the project, worked on Batman movie The Dark Knight.

Blizzard Entertainment, the company behind the World of Warcraft game, which was first released in 2004, will also collaborate on the film.

It is due to be released by Warner Bros.

Details about a release date and casting will be announced as the project develops, added the film studio.

Sam Raimi directing = good chance of Bruce Campbell, the best actor in the history of ever, in the movie.

If he is, even though I have never played WoW longer than two trials, I will be seeing this.

Yeah!!! Instead of spending money making the servers stable (because as of late they have been shit), and making really great content for patch 3.2, they make a movie....
